This workshop covers in-depth interviewing (IDI) from an applied perspective. It begins with a focused overview of this qualitative method, including when to use/not use, and overall rationale for incorporating in-depth interviews into a research study. From these beginning stages of research design, the course covers the essential elements of choosing a study population, selecting an effective sampling strategy, and estimating an appropriate sample size. The workshop then delves into the nuts and bolts of implementing an in-depth interview study. Participants will learn best practices and be provided with examples for developing an effective interview guide. Participants will learn about IDI guide structure and flow, along with techniques to ensure the guide both engages study participants and informs a study’s research questions(s). Next, the workshop transitions into the art and science of conducting an IDI. Participants will learn a range of techniques to establish rapport and enhance the likelihood of interviewer success, and have the option to watch and critique a demonstration IDI. The quintessential skill of inductive probing is covered in depth, including numerous examples and an interactive session, in which participants can practice what they’ve learned. The workshop also addresses the increasingly important topic of remote interviewing and presents participants with empirical data to help choose if, and what type of, remote interview modality is appropriate. The workshop concludes with a discussion of documenting the interview and, more generally, best practices for qualitative data management. In this latter section, participants will learn the importance of using a transcription protocol and be provided with a template they can use or adapt for their own research.

The workshop is comprised of lectures and self-paced hands-on exercises. Examples throughout are drawn from both domestic and international research contexts.

Goals of the Workshop

Our motivating goal is to provide an interactive and engaging experience as we journey through the elements of in-depth interviewing in an applied research context. Our workshop is designed to provide participants with the materials and instruction needed to design and implement an in-depth interview research study, and to apply what they’ve learned to their own projects.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Describe what an in-depth interview is (and is not)
Explain the rationale for choosing in-depth interviewing as a method, particularly in comparison with focus groups
Select an appropriate sampling strategy for an IDI study
Estimate the sample size needed for an IDI study, based on a study’s objectives
Craft an effective interview guide
Implement an in-depth interview that generates data to inform a study’s research question(s)
Describe and execute the various methods of inductive probing
Explain the importance of data management in qualitative research
Design a transcription protocol for an in-depth interview study

Who Should Attend

Applied Qualitative Research: In-depth Interviews (IDIs) is intended for researchers at all levels who wish to gain an understanding of how to design, implement, and document an IDI-based research study. There is no pre-requisite for this workshop. However, we recommend interested individuals view the Applied Qualitative Research: Foundations workshop (that is free-of-charge) prior to this course to provide an epistemological and theoretical orientation for the more practical, hands-on, qualitative workshops.
