Applied Research Design Using Mixed Methods is a three-day course focused on the practical aspects of research design in the context of mixed methods. The course covers the essential principles behind designing fundable research, including: crafting engaging research questions, choosing appropriate sampling strategies, and selecting effective data collection methods (qualitative and quantitative). A significant amount of time is spent on integrating qualitative and quantitative datasets in the context of mixed methods designs.

The course covers qualitative and quantitative techniques commonly used in the social/behavioral and health sciences – in-depth interviews, focus groups, participant-observation, and surveys. Less common, but highly effective, methods are additionally described and include Geographic Information Systems (GIS), document analysis, network analysis, free-listing, vignettes/factorial surveys, direct observation, and projective techniques.

Real-world examples are used to illustrate concepts/methods and highlight common challenges associated with designing and implementing mixed methods research. Although this course is pragmatic in nature, some time is devoted to the history of, and theory behind, the field of Mixed Methods.

Who Should Attend

Our workshop is designed for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty, and researchers from the behavioral, social, and health sciences. This course serves as an introduction for less-experienced researchers and as a refresher for more seasoned researchers. It is for those who wish to gain a foundational understanding of how to design and carry out a successful mixed methods study.

This course is also an excellent springboard for those who wish to pursue further training by subsequently enrolling in one or more of our other workshops on qualitative and quantitative methods.

No specialized software is required for this class.

The Goals of the Workshop

Our goal is to provide participants with a practical roadmap for designing a solid and fundable, mixed methods research study. At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Write cogent and engaging research objectives and questions
Choose appropriate qualitative and quantitative data collection methods for a MM study
Select appropriate sampling strategies for a MM study
Use notation and diagramming methods common to mixed methods research
Integrate qualitative and quantitative data within a mixed methods framework
Define “mixed methods” and its historical trajectory
Describe the various mixed methods designs and typologies

Note: To make the most of the instruction, we strongly encourage participants to bring a research idea to the workshop. Research ideas will be incrementally developed and refined throughout the workshop, with the goal of having a working framework for a proposal at the end of the two days.

What is Provided

Greg Guest teaches the workshop live via Zoom, with recordings posted at the end of each day for those who might miss or wish to review portions. Participants receive access to the livestream, one-year of access to recorded lecture videos, and a downloadable complete PDF copy of the course notes. The PDF is not time-limited and may be retained indefinitely but should not be distributed to others without obtaining prior permission.

Daily Schedule

Livestream lectures will begin at 10:00 a.m. and finish at approximately 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time (US) each day. Lectures will be interspersed with individual exercises and Q&A sessions, as specified in the syllabus. There will be 15-minute morning and afternoon breaks and a one hour lunch break, the exact times of which are determined during lecture. Local time zones within which the participant is connected must be adjusted to correspond to Eastern Time (US).

Interactions with Instructors

Connectivity Requirements

Because participants are receiving the Livestream from Zoom and not broadcasting video images back, the connectivity requirements are minimal. A minimum of 150kbps (kilobytes per second) is required to participate in a video webinar, and this can be wired or wireless. Given typical home internet connections or personal WiFi access, these requirements are quite low. For example, it is recommended that a 3000kbps (or 3mbps, megabytes per second) connection be used to stream a movie on Netflix. A typical WiFi hotspot on a typical cell phone is 20-30mbps, thus any standard internet connection should allow for uninterrupted participation in the webinar. Availability of Recordings

The Livestream does not have DVR-like controls and thus cannot be paused or rewound during the session itself. However, full recordings of Livestream workshops will be available to rewatch for 6 months following the completion of the workshop.

The recordings cannot be saved by the participant and will not be available after the 6 month period. You can log in to your account to access these recordings. The recordings cannot be downloaded by the participant and will not be available after access has expired.

Technical Support

CenterStat by Curran-Bauer Analytics is not able to provide technical support for end-user issues with the Livestream. As such, participants are fully responsible for connectivity that supports the Livestream of audio and video. Information will be provided about the minimum required bandwidth and methods for testing connectivity. However, in the low probability that a participant is not able to connect, there will be access to the recorded sessions for 6 months following the completion of the workshop.
