Description

This 5-day workshop covers the entire qualitative research process from an applied perspective. It begins with a focused overview of the critical elements of research design and sampling strategies appropriate for qualitative research. Qualitative data collection is then covered in detail, with an emphasis on the two most common qualitative methods used in applied research – focus groups and individual interviews. Participants learn about best practices for each of these methods, including remote variations, and then gain practical experience administering them. Data management issues and options are explained, along with unique ethical dimensions of qualitative research. Participants learn how to prepare and conduct a rigorous analysis of qualitative data, working through several exercises from discovering themes, to creating codebooks, to data reduction techniques and conducting inter-coder reliability checks.  The course concludes with the topic of interpreting and writing up qualitative findings.

The workshop is comprised of lecture, individual and group exercises and Question & Answer sessions with the instructors. Examples throughout are drawn from both domestic and international research contexts.
